transferring audio tapes

I am not sure if this is the right place to ask this question but here goes.........

I want to transfer a large number of audio cassette tapes to CD using my hi-fi cassette deck and my computer. I have not tried this before and if anyone has any useful advice (such as what software to use and how to go about it etc.) I would be very grateful indeed.

I'm not sure if this is the best way to do it, but connect a cable to the audio out, or the headphone jack of your cassette deck to the line in on your computer. Then record line in while playing the cassette.
 
Audacity should work just fine. Just plug your tape player into your line-in and tweak the volume a bit. It can be a pain because if you get the volume too loud, it sounds horrible :P
