Transferring DVR Files

Hello. I have a Time Warner DVR. What is the easiest way I can transfer the video files to my laptop or to a external hard drive. I have read that the USB port on the front of the DVR is deactivated so that won't work. I read something about a firewire port but not quite sure. Sorry if this is in the wrong forum.

If it is a DVR that came with your service/cable company then, I would think that would be illegal to do so.
