Transferring From Old to New Computer

Have ordered a new computer.
Old (current) computer is XP Pro.
New (ordered) will be 8.1 :)

I dread having to transfer all my stuff (files, programs, settings, etc) to the new computer. :eek:

Any suggestions on the best way to do it??
Comments on LapLink or a similar program.
 
You'll be able to transfer your files but programs will have to be reinstalled.
 
Laplink does have some software they sell called PCMover which can supposedly copy your installed programs from one PC to another. I have never used the software so can't personally vouch for it but from what I read about it, the software apparently does a pretty good job, the major complaint being that it takes several hours for it to do its work.
 
A while back we had a new member try it and he said some worked and some didnt. I would just manually reinstall all programs.
 
Of course manual install is the better choice and is the reason why I have never actually used the PCMover software. I have and keep all of my install disks so it isn't a problem for me to re-install things. However, for someone that lost or never had install disks, this software could be useful even if it can't successfully copy 100% of the installed programs.
