Transferring OS over to new HD?

I was wondering if I would be able to transfer all content (including an OS) onto a different hard drive and have it work like the original? I currently have a 30 GB HD, with XP on it that I would like to transfer over to a 12 GB HD. I was going to do the swap this weekend, but figured I would ask if it was feasible to do?

*Side note – Has any one ever received the free 400 GB hard-drive offer, which is an advertisement on the top of the forum?

you could use something like norton ghost to transfer an image of you old file system to the new drive

there are countless threads with this same topic...all of which consequently have the same responses...

I dont get how that helped me?

Update* I think I figured it out….

So your pointing out there is countless threads with countless replies, but in reality you just mucked up the forum with another countless reply about other peoples countless threads, which made me make another countless reply/edit about your countless thread, so technically we have both made countless threads/replies and tied them together cause we both posted and replied countlessly?

He's saying that you could have found the answer by searching your topic first.

Anyway, as apj101 already said, Norton Ghost is pretty much the standard in drive imaging (I prefer the simplicity of the older versions, cheaper too). You might have to re-partition too with something like Partition Magic since you're going from a 30 GB to a 12 GB drive; unless, of course, you have the OS on a small partition already.

I know, I was just being smart. I just dont get why people post a reply like that when there is no point in helping out someone. I did a few quick searches and didn't find anything on the topic, so I posted it up.. Oh, well.. I'm over it...

There is no OS on the smaller drive, I just wanted to move everything over, drivers, programs, ect. The material from the 30 GB is pretty much the OS files and a few programs. I just wondered if you could make the 12GB a slave a transfer everything over and then flip flop them afterwards??

Thanks for all your help so far!

basically, what im saying is that it makes it much easier for other people with the same question to find an answer when they dont have to search through an assload of slightly differing threads. my comment might not have helped you, but its childish to think its always going to be about "you". next time, try doing a little research before you come up with questions. theres a reason why people like to use the phrase "please hold your questions til the end."...

Sorry Krimson, I never wanted the thread to come off as being childish or about me. I just wanted some help on the subject and I didn’t have the time to sift through threads. Next time I post, I will do a little more forum searching!!

Oh well... I'm not here to fight or bicker with people; I just wanted some insight on the subject!

Thanks to all who helped!
