Running windows XP Profession SPK2
Also running Norton 360 and AVG Free edition and AVG Anti-Spyware.

AVG Repeatedly brings up a threat msg. identifying the file above as a Trojan Horse PSW.Generic5.UWD.

I have located this file in the registry in two places and deleted, no longer in the registery when i do a registry search.

Cannot delete the dll file in the system32 folder as it is in use can someone please help.

AVG says threat detected, and gives option to heal of move to vault but msg just keeps appearing and the vault just gets the file in it repeatedly.

Have restarted in safe mode, have deleted from registry, system 32 folder allows me to delete other dll files but not this one. have tried renaming the file type to a .doc but access denied, have deleted the file from the system32cache folder.

what can i do as this file is running all the time, how can i remove it. my computer is running very slow and have had crashes where the screen turns off but the computer is obviously still running as hard drive still flashing.

Please someone advise or point me in the right direction.

Another item that can take charge over any file on the system is extra feature you can add to the right click menu in order to Take Ownersip. Most antivirus software companies have their own special removers for trohans as well as I-Worm type viruses. Grisoft has thier own VCleaner found at http://free.grisoft.com/doc/29223/us/frt/0/ndi/67751
 
Please post a HijackThis log.

To do so, download the HijackThis installer from http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/HJTInstall.exe.

Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

When the Notepad window opens choose Edit -> Select All to select the entire log, and copy and paste the log into a reply post.
Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.
 
Hello, thankyou for the reply here is the log, keep getting the AVG virus message everytime I try to open explorer if thats any use. Have tried all the above ideas with no success, so here is the log.

Please download the OTMoveIt by OldTimer and save it to your Desktop. Please do not run it yet.

Please run HijackThis and choose Do a system scan only.

Place a check next to the following entry:
  • O2 - BHO: (no name) - {B2664EAD-6DF2-4EB3-ABDE-8943176404D8} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\d3dpmes.dll
Please close all open windows except for HijackThis and choose Fix checked


  • Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run OTMoveIt.
  • Copy the file path below to the clipboard by highlighting it and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\d3dpmes.dll

  • Return to OTMoveIt, right click on the Paste List of Files/Folders to be moved window and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything on the Results window to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it on your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Please reboot and post a new HijackThis log.

Additionally, I see signs of both Norton and AVG Antivirus in your logfile. It is not a good idea to run two antivirus programs in resident mode, as they can conflict with each other and actually make you less safe. I suggest you either disable the real time protection on one of them or uninstall one. Open the program. Check the 'Input script manually' option.
Click the Magnifying Glass icon.
In the box that opens, paste this:

Files to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\d3dpmes.dll

and click 'Done'

Click the Traffic Light icon to start the program, and OK the prompts to reboot your PC.

Post the Avenger output.txt, which you can find at C:\Avenger\.txt

I don't think I can take the credit for this one, but it looks like you've figured out where I was going with ComboFix and taken the next step yourself.

Your logfile now appears to be clean. Are you having any problems?

One important update: Your Java Runtime Environment is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
Updating Java:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > Add or Remove Programs.
  • Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )
    It should have next icon next to it:
    javaicon.gif

    Select it and click Remove.
  • Then Download and install the newest version from here:
 
Hi there, don't actually know whats happened have simply followed your instructions, will do the java update. what part(s) of the log were wrong to begin with and have they definately gone?

The offending entry was this one:

It indicated that the trojan file had installed itself as a BHO, and is gone from your most recent log. If you didn't make the deletion I assumed you did, I suggest you check to see if the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\d3dpmes.dll is still present, and try to delete it if it is. It wouldn't hurt to run a full scan, just to make sure there's nothing else, but there's certainly nothing showing in your log.

Your logfile also indicates that you are running both AVG Antivirus and Norton. Two antivirus programs running in resident mode can conflict, actually making you less safe. I suggest you either remove one, or disable the real time protection on one and just use it as an on-demand scanner.

No I cannot find it in the file in the system32 folder or the system32\cachedll folder and do not seem to be getting the pop up message anymore, so I have run an AVG scan which has detected something to do with it and looks like has moved to vault and deleted. Have included the AVG results with the three file names below, does these mean anything to you, am i o.k now?
Am currently scanning again to see if finds anything...
P.s. will remove one anitivirus but not sure what best to use as AVG finds trojans etc that norton doesn't but is AVG free edition good enough protection on its on, could you recommend something?

Those detections aren't a problem - the first one is just indicating that the hosts file has been changed, and isn't an infection, the last two are backups that ComboFix has created when deleting the infected file.

With regards to which antivirus to use, that's always going to be a contentious issue, but I've personally found the protection provided by AVG Free Edition to be quite adequate. Make sure you also run regular scans with a program such as AVG Antispyware, as those sort of programs are often more effective at catching trojans.

If you do decide to remove Norton, I suggest using the Norton Removal Tool to remove it completely.
