hey all.
i'm new here, but this looks to be a pretty good site
wonderin if ya'll could help me out a bit
i got 2 harddrive's from a friend of mine i work with
1 is a 60gb maxtor
and the other is a 30gb maxtor

he said that there was already a lot of stuff on them i would probably like. such as programs and stuff

he said he didn't think there was an OS on either of them.

i tried booting to them to double check and it doesn't work.
so i just put them as slave drives.

windows recognizes them.
they are in device manager and show up in system setup

only problem is, i can't figure out how to access them.
no new drive letters have shown up in My Computer or anything

anyone got any ideas as to what i might be doing wrong?
any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

you have to use FDISK to create drive pertition to use that hard drive.
u cann't use a hard drive without pertitioning.

the guy i got the drives from said that there was already a bunch of stuff on them though

i downloaded partition magic and was going to use that, but i wanted to try and find some other way to get accress to them

he said there were some awesome programs and stuff on there

What does it say about the drive in disk management? Are the healthy drives? Are they partitioned?

all that it shows in device manager is that it's there and it says that this device is working properly
i just don't understand it
i was gonna ask him at work tomorrow but he didn't even know if there was an OS on it so i doubt he would know

Thats device manager, I said disk management (contol panel>>administrative tools>>computer management>>disk management), sorry I should have made that more clear before

oh...kewl, i never knew about that before. don't know what it says right now because i don't think it's even connected. it's not even showing up in device managfer now...unfortunatly, i gtg for now though. i'll check it out later or tomorrow
thinks for the tip though

if you have any thoughts, feel free to post em

thanks
goodnight

ok, i checked out the disk manager and it said the drive was unallocated.
no, i was going to use partition magic 8.0 to partition it, i have the program installed and everything, but have no idea how to put in the serial number
anyone either know how to do that or any other way i could partition it

i know fdisk would work, but i have trouble remember how to do that

it's hard enough for me to explain to my customers how to do that when i have it on a screen right in front of me...lol

You should be able to create a partition in disk magnager; just right click on the unallocated space and click create partition. So you weren't able to get any of the data off it?

no i wasn't
:(
so either the guy lied to me, just didn't know what he was talking about(which would be weird considering he was a tech for the military for 20 years, or the data somehow just got lost

oh well, i got enough stuff to fill them back up anyways...lol

plenty of music and stuff
1700 songs last i checked
