Hey all, I am trying to re install Windows XP on an older IBM T42 machine, it had XP on it and was running fine just wanted a fresh install. Tried to boot from cd "Press any key to boot from cd..." clicked a button cd drive cranks then screen goes black with little _ in upper left and cd drive makes no more sounds. I even tried it with different cd drive no difference. Any thoughts?

See if you can make a copy. I don't see manufacture making a difference. Color of dye might. Laser heads can be sensitive. and some are better than others. If ya do make a copy then do this at a slower speed.

What about the condition of the cd or dvd with XP. is it scratched, clean?

How long does it sit on the blinking underscore screen? Booting from a cd takes a while and the screen you are seeing is fairly normal to see when you are booting from a cd.

I heard some mention you can take to places like game stop. they have a machine or something to clean to cd. I always cleaned and wiped myself. What ive seen you do not wipe in circular motion. Its across the cd. Maybe someone else could comment on this. Don't take it to heart.

Is it possible to use a USB DVD drive to do an installation? Take a look in your BIOS. It might be a work around for the problem you are having.

May be like mentioned. Have to be set up as first boot device in bios.
Its an option and another thought. then maybe a micro drive if big enough.
Never did the last. DO have a usb dvd rom burner for my netbook which i don't use often.
