Trouble installing RAM

Today I recieved my 1GB worth of memory to add to my 512MB currently in the computer. I open her up, place the GB into the second memory slot and turn the computer on. Nothing appears on the screen. My tower beeps a few times, then nothing happens after.

I've been able to post here by removing the new memory. What's wrong? I'm sure the memory is compatible. The 512MB is 2700, as is the new 1GB. Do I need to place the 1GB in the first memory slot and the 512MB in the second?

Anyone got any idea?
 
it should only go in one way because of the slot near the middle of the stick. It's quite possible to get a DOA stick, and the beeping you are getting is probably a memory error. You could try installing just the 1gb and see what happens, but my guess is it will do the same thing. Which stick is in which slot should be irrelevant.
 
Feck. I bought the memory over eBay. This should be a joy to sort. As far as I know, I dissipated all static electricity by touching the side of my tower for a few seconds.
 
sorry to hear that, to be sure try just the 1gb but I'm pretty much positive it's a bad stick, it has both the characteristics of one (won't boot, beeps at you). I buy 90%+ of my stuff from newegg or zipzoomfly if you want a reliable place to shop. Can't guarantee you won't get a bad stick from them, but if you do they'll replace it pretty painlessly.
 
yup. sounds like you got ripped. but try to get a refund? head over to ebay or zipzoomfly and try your luck there.

I dont know if this may be excluded as an idea... but does your mother board support that much? or maybe just 1gb of RAM.
 
or it doesn't like having 1GB in that slot... check your manual for memory configurations.

Most likely a bad memory, though.
 
Yeah, I'm pretty sure it supports 1GB. Just to be sure I scanned my computer at www.crucial.com, and after it, they reccomended memory in 256, 512 and 1024, so that just re-inforces the fact that my computer supports 1GB sticks.
 
Well, again, some computers will support larger memory sticks only in certain slots or slot combinations, which is why I suggested looking at the manual.

This is most likely academic, but something to look at before you go through the process of returning that stick.
