Hi, fixed my daughter in laws comp. now on to my sons.

It is a Dell Latitude D620. I've purchased a Hard Disk Drive 500Gb Dell Latitude D531 D620 D820 D830, wdc for the laptop.
I've tried to install windows vista and I get the error message:
Windows Setup could not reinitialize the deployment engine. To install Windows, restart the installation.

I have tried this a few times with no success, any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Install windows by booting from dvd, delete all partitions during custom installation and WITHOUT creating a new partition choose continue.

I prefer using GParted. Very strong utility. Try doing what Okedokey says first though.
If it doesn't work, download GParted here, burn it to a DVD or mount it to a USB and select it in the boot menu.

Okedokey, not quite sure what you mean. I get to language, then Install now, product key, then what type of installation? Upgrade or custom (advanced) I picked custom, takes me to where do you want to install windows? Disk 0 Partition 1 465.8GB Primary is this what I'm supposed to delete?

Yes, delete that partition. Then just click Next on the unallocated space.

Trying the gpart, is there anything I'm supposed to click on when it first boots up?
I just let it run by itself and now a black screen is looking back at me???????

On my way to my daughters I grabbed windows 8.1 and thought I try it got right to the second last stage of installing and the screen went black. Rang a guy (comp tech) he had a look at it said he thought it was the fan, (comp gets hot) but then said (fan not moving on its own, but does move) that it is the motherboard. ???? Also told me that disk read error was coming up.
I asked him roughly what the price of a motherboard was and he said not worth it too expensive. Im not sure what to do now, Ive bought a new HD (DOA?) Ram and now windows 8.1 full version. I'm not sure about the tech, I've had bad experiences in the past and have done what I can fixing/upgrading my comp and the kids. Should I purchase a new motherboard and keep going or scrap it and buy another computer for my son??????

You're wasting money without listening to us. The hard drive sounds like its bad.

What brand is the HDD? Your best bet is to download the manufacturer diagnostic utility and test the drive. See this thread on where to get the diagnostic utility: http://www.computerforum.com/211596-list-hard-drive-diagnostic-utilities-test-your-drive.html

Another option is to use Hiren's Boot CD, which has all the main diagnostic utilities on it. Just download the ZIP, extract the ISO, and burn it to a CD.

Hirens has been run on the computer and that's what came up, disk read error he told me and to contact the supplier I purchased the hard drive from to let him know. Supplier said to send it back, their technicians will check it out and replace.

HD is WD Blue 500GB WD5000LPVX

I am listening to everything you all say and suggest that I do and I'm very grateful for all your help. Frustrating for both, experienced at one end and a novice at the other.

Under Australian law, they need to pay for return costs.

But seriously do you really need 500GB? Get a Samsung Evo 840 120GB and see the laptop transform ....!!!!

For my son, probably not. I actually heard about the solid state drive last nite.
Lessons learned mistakes made and money spent.

I have DOA HD, purchased windows 8.1 full version, vista gone to the bin. Good RAM ;o)
A laptop that may or may not need a motherboard or possibly a fan.

Keep plodding update/renew or trash it and buy a new????

Very grateful to you all for your help as always.

Tabs ;o)
