Trouble overclocking past 2.0GHz

I've been trying to overclock my Athlon XP 2500+ to around 2.3GHz but i've run into a problem. With the multiplier set to 12 and a FSB of 166 it was running at about 2.0GHz (CPU temp=34c, MB=19c). That was fine until i tried to bump it up to 12.5. When i restarted the BIOS did its usual memory test but oddly displayed the words 'AMD Athlon XP 2800' rather than '2500'. This was fine until i recieved a wierd looking screen of white text. It listed all my drives, disks and ports aswell as a 'PCI device listing'. It then said at the bottom of the screen:
"Verifying DMI pool data.....Update success
Boot from CD
Boot from CD"
After that it did nothing so i restarted and went back into BIOS. At 166x12.5 i was getting a CPU temp of 40c and MB temp of 24c. The Vcore was around 1.7v. I put it back to a multiple of 12 and now it works fine running at 2.0GHz but i still think it can go faster. I've only just installed a new case fan so at first i thought it could be something to do with that but i'm pretty sure it isn't. Please help, my pc still works but i would be dissapointed to know that i bought a new case fan and was only able to overclock by 100MHz

Here is a little information to all that want to overclock AMD,

AMD is diffrent from Intel. AMD uses RAM to overclock (basically) and Intel doesn't.

So when your trying to overclock an AMD processor you will need awesome RAM for good overclocking.

Ya, RAM has alot to do with overclocking AMD processors.

I say if you get "better" RAM you will get more out of your processor.

instead of up the muliplyer just incease that FSB. If your RAM is standard you might want to put it on a divider so the RAM does not get stressed ! Then make sure there are PCI locks inplace ! For more info read the Overclocking 101

Define 'better' RAM. At the moment i'v got a gig and a half of PC2700. Is that not good enough? But how does that explain the strange boot screens i've been seeing?

It all depends on the "Value" of the RAM basically..

The boot screens let you know what your POST is doing.

So if you change settings in BIOS it will tell you that the pool data is updated and so forth using that POST or "boot screen".

get some PC3200/DDR400 (i think thats compatable with athlon xp) then you could have it set to 12x200 = 2.4ghz :D

But how does that explain the strange boot screens i've been seeing?
I have no idea why that would happen, the system was probably not happy running at them settings.

What if i set a divider of 14, changed the fsb to 190, and kept the multiplier at 12.
12x190=2280MHz, 7/6 x 12=14, 2280/14=163

that makes no sense whatsoever.
overclocking the ldt speed will change the ram frequency(as well as the cpu + fsb/htt), whether it be an intel proc or an AMD proc.
changing the CPU multiplier on the other hand, only changes the cpu frequency, whether it be intel or AMD.
thats why they lock upward multipliers (intel or AMD procs, excluding the FX series), to keep it from being so easy to overclock!

Agreed with fade. Whenever you raise the FSB to overclock, you are increasing RAM speed also unless you run a divider to keep the RAM at current speeds. You do not need "awesome" RAM to overclock. You could overclock with Value RAM although not as high.
