trouble setting up external display

I'm trying to hook up a LCD monitor to my laptop to extend the display. Windows recognizes the display but the monitor keeps displaying No Input Signal. I've already set the settings of the external display to it's native res of 1024x768 and 60hz refresh rate and still nothing.

Have you tried switching between inputs? Or are you looking for extra screen space?

I want to extend the display. For example I have Photoshop on my laptop screen and iTunes & Tweetdeck on the external display.

I think there's a checkbox that says "extend my windows desktop onto this monitor" otherwise it will just switch inputs.

I know. I did that initially but nothing.
