Trouble with Memory

Sup guys, Imma newbie here and got a question to ask. I recently tried to OC my comp through the BIOS setting and when I restarted my comp., the computer js made some beeping noise and nothing showed up on my moniter. Js the continous beeping noise.. So I shut my comp off and tried moving the memory sticks around and unplugged and plugged back several things to try to make it work.. I know it sounds dumb.. So I looked up the MB manual and found out how to get it back to work again.. After I got my comp to work again I tried to play CS but I noticed the performance had dropped noticeably, so I checked my system in the control panel and only 256MB of RAM had shown up when I really have 512.. I've tried moving the memory sticks around into different slots but no results.. Sorry bout the long story but I thought I had to share this story in order to tell you guys how the problem had happened. If anyone can help I would be very grateful.. Thank You.

soo....you have 2 256 mb sticks in? are they the same frequency? can your motherboard handle 512mbs? (im guessing yes, because youre playing cs)

Try running each stick individually and see if your system boots correctly. It's possible that when you moved the sticks around you damaged one of them.

I agree, you might've accidentally shocked them, say you had some static electricity on you or your clothes, and fried it. You should always ground yourself when working on your comp. its just a smart precaution to take. Take it from me, i've fried a few parts by accident.

Okay so lets say that one of the memory sticks did get damaged.. If Im going to buy another one does it have to be the exact same one? I remember when I gave my friend some RAM from my computer, it worked perfectly fine on his computer. I didnt even know if it would work for his computer but it js did. lol

It will need to be at least the same speed or faster, otherwise your system will slow down to the speed of the slowest one. If it's decent quality RAM (some sort of CL2, for example) you're best to get another similar stick (although with 256MB sticks it's unlikely, unless it was an expensive system bought a few years ago). Between the Value series of different companies, there's not too much difference, but i'd probably get another stick from the same manufacturer anyway, if possible. The manufacturer should be printed on the side of the RAM. Certainly if you are running dual channel RAM, you'll need the same type.

To be honest, though, if one of your sticks is bad i'd recommend upgrading the RAM anyway.

Well I tested out the RAM individually and unfortunately one of them did go wrong. When I tested the damaged one, my nothing showed up on my moniter js a beeping noise.. Dammit I really didnt want to spend anymore money on my comp, I was content with the way it already was.. Thanks for the support guys.
