Trouble with ping

ok, maybe i'm retarded, but I can't figure this out. I can connect to the internet (obviously, since I'm posting this), however, go to start-->run-->cmd to open up the dos prompt, and type in ping www.google.com I get nothing. I even tried typing ping localhost and still got nothing. I'm running windows xp... anyone have any suggestions on why I can't ping anything?
 
if you are behind a router it could be blocking that service, however if you tried pinging localhost and it didn't work seems weird to me.

did you ping 127.0.0.1?
