troubleshooting Dell latitude D610

No recovery disc. Start up and login then hour glass for an hour. Cant install nothing like malaware bytes or ccleaner or what ever. Tried taking back to earlier date. (Feb 2011). Same thing. Example: login, click start and then hour glass appears. Do i have any options for this for troubleshooting and what can i do or should do. Its XP Pro 32.

Test the hard drive. Pull the drive and see what the manufacturer is, then download the correct utility and boot to it to test the drive.

I'd also download Memtest86+ and test the RAM.
