Trying to build a COM and need major help on finding right CPU

Hi everyone,

i just joined the forum hoping i can get some help from you experts

I want my computer to perform simply one task: able to watch HD files thru my HD tv

I want HDMI capability. Which means hdmi output/input.


I currently have a p4 with 2.somehting GHz, and about 1 GB ram, and its starting to chop the pics when i play 720p 4.2 gig files, imagine the 20 and above GB files it wouldnt stand a chance.

Let me know what you have and what you would suggest for a CPU to accomplish this task as im not too knowleadgeable when it comes to computer.

Just about anything out should do it. Since you're watching high def video, definitely pick up any newer DX10 card that supports hardware acceleration for high definition video. Any of the UVD ATI Cards (HD 2600pro/XT), or even an nVidia 8500gt, or an 8600gt(s) if you play games.

It offloads the work from the processor, to the graphics card, making playback much smoother.
