Trying to buy an inexpensive laptop...

For my son in first yr college. My question is, can I buy a 2 year old laptop(much cheaper) and still get the same internet speed performance as a new laptop. In other words does the specs of the computer have a lot to do with the pages being brought up fast or is it more the fact that we have road runner cable (20 mb speed)? Thank you. Frank

With most modern pc's having high speed Internet would be more important. Multitasking situations would be an exception.

Thanks lion. For example, he does his math homework online, so he would be doing just that one task. He must connect to the schools website to do the math home work. He says that it is kind of slow compared to other sites he frequents. So in this case do you think the newer model is going to make that much of a difference?

If all he's really going to need it for is internet Windows XP with 1GB RAM and a decent CPU should be fine. Just make sure that if you get a Vista rig you get at least 2GB of RAM and Intel Core2Duo... he may run into speed issues with anything less than that. The question is: what is he going to do with it? For instance if he needs a video editing or photo editing rig he's going to need a lot more than what he would need if he just needed a rig for word processing.

I'd suggest looking around. We got my mother some $400 lappy from Walmart (a special they had a few months back) and it's wonderful for internet browsing. Of course about any PC made within the past 4 years or so would work pretty well on the Internet, but if for nothing else, I prefer having the new parts in the new PC. Laptop harddrives tend to fail, screen hinges can become loose, roughed up cases, etc...
