Trying to get a guest house on a network...

Hey all,

I have a guest house that I'm trying to get on my network. It's about 100 feet from the main house. I know the basics of all this stuff and I really want to try and do this without getting charged double by my ISP. I didn't know if there was some real good wireless router out there that could be capable of this, but the one I have now will not do this (granted its about 5 years old). The other question I have is, i dont know how it all works, but what keeps a person (say me) from just buying a second modem and hooking that up? Like I said I know the basics, but past that I don't know much.

Thanks for the help!!

No you cant hook a second modem into the same phone line.. Doesnt work.

BUT if the place is onyl 100ft away, get a new Cat5 Cable cut to the distance you need and run it out there. You could run it under ground wrapped if you want. The only limitation you need to worry about.. the Cable cannot exceed 328Ft or 100 meters.

Plug it in and run it over. Then plug it in as an uplink into a nother router. The ISP wont know the difference.

Failing that, if you dont have the means to run such a long cable you could use a YAGI aerial from the guest house, and a rangermax router from the other location , providing there is a good line of sight between the 2 you might be able to get a reasonable signal. Is there any existing cabling in the guest house that runs back to the house currently? you only 2, 2 pair cables for Cat-5 as 4 of the wires arent used.

i know that the regular tv cable runs from the main house to the guest house, so i dont see why I can't run a cat5 cable there, do you think you could tell me where i could go about finding somewhere to get a cable cut to that length for me? thanks a lot!!
