Okay so I have this old PC I just got to turn on after a couple years. I'm trying to use but it is just running terribly slow and sketchy. I have a whole lot of quests for ya.
Its about 8 years old and hasn’t been used for a couple years. I have a very vague idea of what I can do to help it but there are several things that confuse me.
First, I don’t think it has any viruses but the anti-virus programs are very old. I think it has more then one too. I tried updated them but it just didn’t go through. Downloading seems to be very difficult for this computer. Basically, all I need is a program that has a firewall and a program that has anti-virus, right? That’s one thing I just really don’t get about computers. Then, can I just uninstall the virus programs on there and then go online and just download something that’s up to date? Or would doing things in this order cause my computer to get sick and freak out? Also, if I keep using the internet with these out dated programs will that kill my computer?
Second, disk clean up. So I click on disk clean up and it gives me two options: “PRESARIO [C]” and “PRESARIO_RP [D:] What is the difference between the two? Anyway when I choose D it says it can’t save me any space and when I choose C its says “calculating” for a good while, and then finally it tells me all the space it can save me or whatever. I let it run for about an hour but it didn’t seem to be making any progress so I canceled it and thought id give defragmenting a try.
Okay so defragmenting. I go to defragment, under the D it says 4.96 GB under capacity, 180 MB under free space and 3% under %free space. Under C it say 107Gb under capacity 73.44GB under free space and 68% under %free space. So what does all that mean?
It wouldn’t let me defragment the D because there was only 3% free space and I need at least 15. I’m currently doing the C, so well see how that go’s. Its taking a very long time. Its 14% done after at least a half hour.
I thought deleting some programs would help but there didn’t seem to be much I could do under the change or remove programs thing.
I tried deleting all the internet history and all that under internet options. that too, took a very long time. I actually left the house while it was doing all that. I'm just assuming that it went through. Didnt seems to change anything.
I have another old computer. Is there anything I can take out of that and put into this one to give it more memory or whatever it is it needs?
Every time i start the computer i get these same messages: " runner error. Invalid BackWeb aplication id '1940576" and "RUNDLL. Error loading C;\Program Files\ Acceleration Software\Anti-Virus\sstsmon.dll. The specified module could not be found" Any idea what all that is about?
I think I have heard that it can help speed up your computer if you take out some of the processes in the task manager window, when you pres control alt delete. I just started up my computer, I havent touched anything and there are 42 processes. I dont understand how it can be doing so much when it isnt really doing anything. So how do I know which ones to get rid of and how do I get rid of them permanently?
The only files I really need off this computer is all the music I have on itunes. Everything else could go. And the only programs I really need are firefox, itunes and word. everything else i could just download as i go. So is there a way to get my music off and then completely wipe out everything? Would that do any good?
Please, any advise you can give me to make this computer better or at least understand what the heck is going on would be MUCH appreciated.
Thanks a million!
