i bought an external hardrive and i bought windows 2000 (lol not enough money for pro) just for my external hard drive. the problem is, its that once i install it i get this blue screen saying some stuff i don't understand. i heard that you can't boot an OS from an external hard drive but i also heard that it is possible to use a software (such as virtual PC) to be able to boot from the hard drive as if it had an OS without a problem.
plz help

you see i need an operating system that will boot up from my usb 2.0 hard drive. its not intended for only my PC but to access my OS in my external hard drive from other computers.

Oh, and i would like to know too, I have an external usb2.0 harddrive, same situation, same question.

edit: but with xp, not 2k

kk

ive heard that virtual pc works but the problem is, its that when i look up virtual pc in google it says its for having windows xp in a mac computer so its totally different from what i want.

2k and xp tomato, tomato either way same technique

ok...i think i have a solution for you but its not gonna be pleasing i am sure...apparently this option has to be set up in the BIOS...how it has boot from C:..D:..cdrom ect.. with newer BIOS's there's an option to boot from a USB device this would be your external drive without that option there's no way since windows loads the USB drivers...you might could get around this with a usb driver disk but i highly doubt it...if there's no option to boot from a USB device try updating your BIOS
