i downloaded ubuntu from the internet, and i extracted the zip file to my desktop, but when i try to burn it to a dvd, the 'dist' file has an error and cant copy over... i really have no clue what to do. did i download a program that you cant boot from? do i have to download a program thats meant specifically for that?

NO. you did something wrong.Often when you have multiple program for iso's on your pc an ISO may look like a ZIP file (a winrar zip file). in my case an iso looks like a zip file but instaed it should be like a nero icon. anyhows there's nothing to extract just burn it to disc..where did you download that from Ubuntu itself or other sites ?

and remember ubuntu is not DVD it's CD

yes i downloaded it from ubuntu directly. so what your saying is dont extract it and burn it straight to my cd? that makes sense, i guess, ill try it and get back to you with my results

also, does this mean i cant use a dvd? i dont have any cd's lol

EDIT: now its giving me an error saying that windows has encountered a problem trying to copy blahblahblah into dvd drive E... then the only option ig gives me is retry or cancel, and rety does nothing...

i told you to burn it directly to disc, there's no extraction or whatsoever.
CD, ubuntu is CD thats why its 690+MB. you can't make a dvd with it it wont boot

ok then that solves my problem right there... i guess it cant readd an iso image from a dvd? i see. will a cd-rw work then?

no a cd-rw is 650mb. im sure that iso is bigger than 650mb. if it's smaller then burn it but im sure its bigger than 650

Also, don't just burn it as data, don't just drag an drop. You have to have a CD burning program, such as Nero, and you have to use the "burn image to disk" option.

i know, i did, but i used i program that ubuntu specified on their website, just so i am sure that i dont mess up... its called infrarecorder, it works well from what i've done so far

I guess it should be fine as long as you burn the image straight to cd.
I had the same proble when I first extracted the image on to the HD.
When I installed directly from the image it was fine...
Also I've got it on cd-rw...

ok, but the file i downloaded is 690megs, so ill just use a normal CD... thanks for your help ill make a new thread with all my new questions when i get ubuntu set up

i am having trouble, BAD... i bought six cd's, and i burned one with kubuntu and one with ubuntu... i figures whichever one i like best i will keep... anyways, everything is fine and dandy when i go to boot and everything, but when i click 'install ubuntu' an error happens somewhere and the screen goes blank with a little flashing _ at the top left corner...

EDIT: its not frozen, and actually its trying to revert to windows or womething because i can press ctr-alt-del and it will go back

Not quite true ;)

I have 2 CDRW's on my desk in front of me, one Memorex and one Philips, both are 700MB. I only ever use CDRW or DVDRW and all the CDRW's I have are 700MB.

Possible bad burn or bad ISO.

If you didn't, try burning the ISO at 4x or less.

hmm no my burn is good, but im getting the same problem... oh and to clear it up a little, it does load and everything, it loads for about five minutes, appears to refresh, and then it goes to that little blinking _ in the corner
