As stated I'm trying to get a desk top back in commission. I've tried multiple hard drives, and keyboards. I'm now stuck. Here is what my screen says l.

error
Keyboard error or no keyboard

Detecting ide atapi device
Found CD-ROM, try to boot fail

Detecting floppy drive a media
Insert system disk and press enter

Sounds like its not detecting a hard drive. Do you have a keyboard attached? This must be a really old system.

I do have a keyboard attached. I've tried a few actually. Also tried a few hard drives. It is old compaq sr5000.

Try going into the bios to see if the bios detects a hard drive. Or possibly there is a setting to enable IDE channels. Also check to make sure ps/2 port is enabled. Have you tried usb keyboards or just ps/2 type?

I've only tried sub key boards, in all ports. I don't think they are working because I can't get to the bios. I'll see if I can dig out a ps/2

Alright. Ps/2 keyboard works. The only thing this computer will do is pop up the checksun error. Any way to make this monster go to the bios menu? I'm still in the noob section with this stuff.

When you get the checksum error, there should be a message saying what button to press to enter setup, which is the bios. Most likely your system date and time is wrong, which will need to be set correctly. Cmos battery may be dead since this is an old system.
