Hey, I just moved back from the dorms to my home and my brother has a VISTA desktop PC which he is connected through dsl and works fine. However, when I Bring my wireless router and try to hook it up through vista...its a linksys wrt54g...The desktop won't connect? IT will say "Can't communicate with DNS Server so and so....Network DIagnostics pinged the remote host but did not recieve a response"

Any help is appreciated

vista is not to blame, in fact, vista is actually better then xp in that certain perspective. when i installed vista, i had no need to install the modem and router, they just worked, i didnt even have to click a button for them to start up...

DSL is not as easy to setup as Cable, the thing most dont understand about DSL is that it does requires a user name and pw to connect.
in a one computer setup ( without a router ) the user name and PW is set in the modem setup.
when you try to access the internet the modem will verify the connection and if one is not there the modem will connect to the ISP using the stored info.
when attacting a router this does not work. the modem needs to be set to a bridged ethernet connection and the router needs to be set to PPPoE with the user name and PW. this way the router is in control of the connection.

this is a simple process, you will need to connect one pc directly to the modem and enter the address 192.168.1.254 ( this address may depend on the model of modem ) this will get you to the modem setup page. the user name and pw are the same as the unser name and pw on the DSL account.
once the modem is set to bridged ethernet and saved and rebooted you then connect the router and enter its setup page 192.168.1.1 and set the router to make the connection.
and your done

hope this helps

Thanks that makes sense. But how exactly do I set up an ethernet bridge? I connected it directly to the model (the host pc)....and went to the dsl configure page entering the address you gave me. What do i do to make this an ethernet bridge? is there an option where you just click yes on ethernet bridge? I went around different menus and didn't see anythinga bout ethernet bride? or is it something that i manually do like enter an ip adresss somewhere?

thanks

EDIT: Nevermind, I got it. Thank you SO MUCH Deepblue. You have been a great help. I genuinely appreciate it.
