turning off the computer moniter

It's not really bad for either thing to stay on all the time but, it could over-heat over a long period of time (the cpu that is). No problems here and my pc has been on for over a week strait. I turn off my monitor at night though just to save electricity.

same here.. with todays LCDs being pretty tough... i dont think u have to worry about that anymore

yea my computre screen and LCD been running for a good 2mo straight, i mean with restart ,and havn't had any problems at all... but my monitor is a syncmaster.... they are pretty good..

I have my monitor set to go to sleep after 45 min. screensaver goes on in 20 min. before.
Computer stays on months, no problems. And if I do shutdown for some time, then I turn the monitor off by the power block instead of the switch on the monitor. First thing that will usally go on the monitor is the power button.

Who are you going to believe? Your uncle who doesn't know what he's talking about, or us on a COMPUTER FORUM?

Does your uncle have any proof that what he says is true? That's just a myth, or whatever, just like saying that masturbating makes you blind or that professionall wrestling is real.

OK,

if you leave your monitor on it will use more electricity.
if you leave your monitor on it will burn out and won't last as long
if you leave your computer it is fine, just uses more electricity

You should always turn off a monitor when it isn't being used. Especially with CRTs, it's a fire hazard. With LCDs, it'll burn out the backlight quicker.

BTW: I wish LCD manufacturers manufactured their monitors so a user can easily slide a $5 backlight cartridge in the back of the monitor so that if it burns out, it isn't a difficult and expensive deal. It should be as easy to change as a lightbulb or a printer cartridge.

If you live where lightning storms happen a lot or if your power supply (not the computer's, the supply to your home) is not reliable, unplug your computer when you are not using it. Whether you spent $10 or $100 on a surge strip or UPS, whatever, you shouldn't trust it. You might go to work or school or out of town and a perfectly sunny day may turn into something that looks of a scene on Twister and it may be too late.
