TV as monitor problem

Hey,

I hooked up my tv to my computer via an s-video cable, but when i go to switch my monitor to my tv, windows wont let me change the tv resolution to more than 640x480. However, my tv can stand 1280x1024. Furthermore, the highest i can now change my laptop resolution to is 1024x768. This sucks because my tv is blurry as hell when i try to use it as my monitor. Any feedback is appreciated.

A standard definition TV supports 720x480 interlaced. Computers are not interlaced, thus a good bit of quality is dropped during the converstion. If your TV can handle such resolutions, it would NOT be through SVHS. Try component or VGA if at available.

i get the whole interlaced thing, but i still don't think that's it. When i right click, settings and stuff, it wont even let me select monitor two. monitor two continues to be grayed off as if it werent there, but it is because i can view my desktop on my tv screen, just in a highly blurred manner.

I'm not totally sure what you mean in the 2nd post, but I'm 100% sure the blurry-ness is caused by the conversions and the interface you're using.

thats the thing though, its not a standard tv, its hd with a resolution capability of 1280x1024. my computer is limiting it though. is the only way to fix the blurr to upgrade my laptop graphics card?

Haha, if the TV supports such a high res, doesn't it have some other input? VGA, DVI, Component? I can't think of any laptop that doesn't at least have VGA out...

my laptop and tv both have vga connections, but i was told by the dell support people that s-video was optimal for tv connections.

Let me give you some advise. Don't ever listen to what Dell or most any other support groups has to say... There will be absolutely no comparison between VGA and S-Video .

What an idiot. S-video may be fine for a standard def TV but you obviously don't have ona those. Use the VGA cable man! :)
