TV out neh :( with my NVIDIA 6800 XT

Hope someone can help me out here :)

I want my NVIDIA card to display the desktop on both my computer monitor and also on my Sony Trinitron NTSC TV.

Fact 1: I have an AGP port for my video card.
Fact 2: My TV has only COMPOSITE (RCA) input.

For a long time, i have been using my "ATI RADEON 9200 SE" which has a VGA OUT and a COMPOSITE OUT. With this card, I could watch my desktop on both the compter and also on the TV (using the composite out for the tv).
The only negative is that this old card does not have features like vertical/horizontal span, dual view etc (which would enable me to display, say a movie output from the computer on to the tv; but also work on something different, say microsoft word at the computer at the same time.

My new card, the NVIDIA Geforce 6800 XTreme XFX (AGP) however, has the above much needed feautures. Problem is that, it has a DUAL DVI output and a 9 pin S-Video out and NOT a composite out.

Now I bought some adapters that would convert the DVI to VGA and then to Composite. But I am getting NOTHING (a black screen) on the TV. I tried changing the resolutions (decreasing to 800 *600 etc). But so far, nothing works.

Fact 3: I KNOW that BOTH the DVI outs of my NVIDIA card work because I tried connecting two computer monitors to those outs. Both monitors worked flawlessly........I tried Dual view, horizontal span etc..........ALL WORKED!!

Could you please help me figure out a solution to this?

Would I really have to buy a NEW card which is AGP, has DUAL VIEW and also has COMPOSITE OUT???

(I am attaching photos (below) of both my cards and also the adapters. Note that I only need to use any 1 of these 2 adapters. They both do the same thing. Just making sure that the adapter is NOT faulty)

If a converter/adapter would work, why doesn't the one I am using (VGA to COMPOSITE) work ?? ---------- See..I tried using two different versions of that adapter and still doesn't work.

The other thing I didn't mention earlier is that.......I did buy a SVIDEO to COMPOSITE adapter cable; but it turns out that the kind of SVIDEO pins this requires is different from what the adapter cable has (i hate the SVIDEOS having all different kinds of pin numbers and pin positions).

So...........should I experiment buying another adapter too, like you said? Anything else.....................please :(

there are different types of DVI. DVI-I will output an analog signal, and will work for converting to VGA then to composite because that is all analog. DVI-D will only output digital, which a small converter will not be able to convert to analog (you need an expensive piece of equipment for that). i would avoid trying to convert a DVI to composite, its just too complicated. as far as converting s-video to composite, i have done that for years, i dont know that much about the pin configurations tho, maybe somebody else could help with that

oh excellent point. Never knew about the digital/analog difference with the DVI outputs. Maybe that is indeed the case. Getting the Correct (regarding to pins) svideo to composite adapter might take a little bit of time; but surely is not impossible.

I will try that way.

But before that......I would just need to confirm that this NVIDIA card indeed outputs as DIGITAL on the DVI. Can you tell me a way to confirm this (if the dvi is analog or digital)??

(i have seen dvi to composite converters going for $200 on ebay; so what you are saying makes more sense ---- they are probably dvi digital to composite converters)

Thank youuuuuuuuuu

man.....excellent site.

But more confused now. From the figures, I now know that BOTH the DVI outputs from the nvidia card are ANALOG (not digital).

So any ideas??

(if those were digital, everything would have been clear from what you told me in your first post)

hey, just so you know, if you have deduced that you have a DVI-I port, that means it will output both analog AND digital. any monitor that has a DVI port will automatically use the digital signal. if you use a converter, it will convert it to analog. my question to you is this, does your TV have component (Red, Blue, Green) inputs? if it does, they make a DVI-component converter that may do exactly what you are looking for. im still somewhat confused as to why the s-video didnt work, i did not know that there were different s-video connections. that in itself should prove that i am not an expert on a PC-TV connection, but best of luck to you!
