TV-Out Resolution

i got a standard tv and i want to use it as a monitor.

I know my tv is 640x480 resolution so if i change my desktop settings to 640x480, how will it look on my tv?

i read online about resolution issues about tv since they cant handle the resolution in computers but if i set the computer to 640x480, how will the picture be?

A standard definition TV is 720x480, but 640x480 is about as close as you can get using most computers.

The picture will still be blurry, but most text will be readable at 640x480. It really depends on your tv-out and some other settings. If you cut your flicker-filter off, most videos would look better, but you couldn't read anything even at such a low resolution...

I have a hdtv, the resolution is 1024x768 but can set it to more.
the text is still blurry but readable. The quality of the video is very good, i mean really really good.
From my ATI driver setting you can decrease the blurry.

ahh thank u.

so an sdtv would suck if it was used as a monitor but an hdtv is just fine.

ive seen some hdtv advertising it can go higher than 1024x768. but if used as a monitor, thats as high as it gets. is that rite?

idk i have an hdtv that supports 1280 by 720, however my computer will only let me view 1028 by 768 on it and i don't know how to fix this, so you may be correct chuckwillis, if anyone knows how to create a custom resolution so I can enable the full potential of the tv please let me know

needcomputerfast,

how does the picture quality look on the hdtv? does it fit the whole screen? in other words, is it just like using a monitor or does it look different?

the the_other_one said that with an sdtv, the whole screen will not be filled. i dunno if that is the case with an hdtv

also, can u adjust the resolution for an hdtv? for a computer, u can do it by going to display properties>settings. im just wondering if u can do the same for an hdtv, like pick a resolution ideal for a pc monitor.

it looks fine on my hdtv but Windows will only let me run it 1024 by 768 so it doesn't fill up the whole screen, it leave two blank spaces on the side for the left over pixels. However, using option on mhdtv I can make it so the whole screen is covered but it just stretches out the graphics and makes them less crsip.

Yeah SD does suck, make sure its HD compatible if you are getting a new monitor.

almost ALL computer monitors are HD and HAVE been for more than a decade.

also, on an SD TV about 7 yrs ago, i saw my friend hook his computer up to his TV. It was a big screen tv, but that shouldnt matter that much when talkin about resolution. He somehow got it to display superbly. However, back then most people had their computers set to 1024x720, around their, or lower, so most source material were optimized for that resolution. Still, i think it totally depends on the quality of your TV out and the connection you are able to use. His dad was really good with computers so maybe thats why his setup looked that great...

edit: also it snot the monitor that is limiting the OUTPUT res (not the display res) but the os and hardware. if you are able to get windows to support additional resolutions (with a gpu??) then you would be able to fill your screen better.
