hi i have a hp media center pc. i have had it for about a year and all of a sudden i go to record a tv show and it says that i it has no tuner installed.
i took the following steps to try to fix it.
1.) driver recovery
2.)uninstall/reinstall
3.)physically took it out and cleaned off the dust then reinstalled it,.

none of these worked what should i do
there havent been any power surges or any thing of that sort
thanks

Have you looked in the device manager under "Sound, Video, and Game Controllers" to see your model tuner card has a yellow mark or tried right clicking and choosing the update driver option? On occasion drivers can become inactive and need refreshing by first removing them totally or simply browsing for an updated set you download from the support site. What version of Windows is currently installed? XP MCE 2005? Vista won't see drivers for some time. The primary here still has XP with Vista on the 2nd drive and no good news yet there.

tried the update and it still doesnt work.....i dont get it i check it and it says it is installed and working properly but its not.
how much would a new one of these things cost?

Cost depends on make, model, and vendor for the most part. Depending on the quality and features offered you can easily climb over $100- for some model video cards with tuners built included. The AverMedia pci model currently installed here including FM radio tuning runs for $69.99 as seen at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16815100008

A few low end models for $25 or less can be seen at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...222+1148410218+4093&Submit=ENE&SubCategory=47 for the basic tuner capability only. For video capturing and other things you then have to look into higher models.

if i do purchase a new tuner will i still be able to do everything like i used to through media center or do i have to use a seperate program.
i would like to use the media center to watch/record tv.

That will depend if the MC detects the card you have installed. On the Vista drive here the card remained invisible even with a new driver set installed. I just installed the new in December when an older one let go. Both the card and software alike have to run on the XP primary. I was under the assumption you needed a subscription for tv and other things. Here I have to plugin a signal source directly for video capturing or patch the cable tv box in order to see direct recording with the tuner card's own software.
