how exactly do TV Tuners work

i don't need any special service, i can use my current cable service and just plug it into the TV Tuner card - watch my shows, flip through any channel i want, and record (if i have the feature). am i right?

could anyone recommend a brand to me, i've gone to newegg.com and saw some

are TV Tuners worth it?

for me is worth if only if i'm going to be recording them onto the hardrive. if i'm just gonna be watching it like a tv then i rather watch em on the tv.

I have the Sabrent from tigerdirect.com , and it's alright, it doesn't have the best quality at full screen, but it's ok...
