Two computers, one modem, no cables down the stairs

I have my computer an Apple Mac G4 upstairs in my room.
There is a Dell downstairs.
The DSL comes in through every phone jack.
My question is how do I get the modem to stay in my room and still have internet on the Dell downstairs WITHOUT running an Ethernet cable down the stairs from the modem in my room?
I have tried buying another modem and plugging each computer up to a single modem through the phone line that is close to the computer but everytime I do this the internet doesn't work on either computer.
Would it work if I kept the modem in my room and just bought a router that would be plugged into from the phone jack then to the Dell? Because it seems that once a modem is plugged up to a phone jack somewhere in the house the modem works through all the phone jacks. I might be wrong though.
Anyway to solve this problem without running an ethernet cable down the stairs from the modem to the Dell?
My goal is to have a line go from my phone jack to the modem to my Apple and have a line go from the phone jack downstairs to something to the Dell. Or anyway other way that overall process would work.

If the modem connects using standard ethernet, most any wireless router would work just fine. You'd simply need a wireless card in one computer, both if you want, but wireless routers almost always have wired ports on them as well.
