Im new to building and made a few errors and had a few wires in the wrong places..i had my ide storage drive set as slave..i set it as master and now when i boot up..i get the option to choose 2 versions of xp..the first one boots fine..but the 2nd one says i have to replace a file..what is confusing me is i only have one operating system installed..and there is no windows install on my storage drive..i read up a lil on it and was told to delete something from the boot.ini file..BUT..i wanna be 100% sure im doing it right as i really dont wanna reformat again..heres whats in my boot ini..what do i delete?

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

OK, I would backup all your data(if possible), get a livecd/dvd of GParted(use to format all drives and partitions)http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=115843&package_id=125754&release_id=595800, format all drives and partitions. Then, make sure the IDE cables and jumpers are all correct, boot up pc, and re-install windows.

to reinstall windows, go into the BIOS, and make sure to set boot from cd first(will also need to do this for gparted). Then pop-in the xp disk, and reboot you're pc.

If you don't understand some of this or need some help, just post back, and we'll happily assist you.

no need to do that... simply do this..

start>run>msconfig>click ok>click on boot.ini tab>click check all boot paths and one will more then likley say bad click ok then click apply and ok and you are done.. simple as that...

That is kind of bad advice, you don't need to format the drive. Just delete the wrong entry. I would go what codeman said first, and then if that didn't work I would just format the boot sector and windows should repair it next boot automatically. if that didn't work I would then go into recovery console and just rebuild it from the XP CD, and if that didn't work then I would wipe and reload.

All of those previous solutions only take a few seconds to a few minutes to run so it is worth it to try them first.

Thats because there is only one OS there. It will not delete the master OS.

Your best off saving all necessary data and wiping the drive if you feel you screwed up somehow.

from what you are showing us it should not be prompting you for a 2nd operating system becuase the boot ini file only sees 1 file bro..

from this :
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

to your picture it removed the 2nd one restart and see if its still coming back...

Actually you can accomplish the delete of the boot.ini inside of windows w/o using msconfig. First go to control panel - Folder Options - View Tab. Then put a check next to "Show hidden files and folders" and uncheck "hide protected operating system files". Then go to "My computer" and open the main drive (usually c). Then open the file named "Boot". Delete the line that you need and press File - Save. Thats it I believe! Then change the folder options back to what they were. Then go to msconfig and see if it changed it.

i did that..restated..still the same thing..there has to be 2..if not then why am i getting the option of choosing 2? This started because..my main drive was showing up as a slave..i got this "verifying dmi pool data" message which lasted for bout 3 seconds..after that i was told to switch the sata ports on the mobo..i switched it to 1..wouldn't boot..when i switched it back to 4..i got this dual boot issue..

Which one do i delete though?

There's an easy way to find out. See this part?
Code:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
Simply change one them to look like this:
Code:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professional - Check Good" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
Then you can see which one works and remove the other one. It should show up in the same order as when you boot up but if you want to be sure this is an easy way :)
