two motherboards killed with new CPU

I have an old Dell Optiplex Gx110 that I upgraded to xp. It worked great for the basic web browsing i wanted it for, but I decided I wanted it to play DVDs.
To play DVDs I needed to upgrade the 800mhz processor, It had to be a pentium III for the mobo to accept it, so I bought the fastest Pentium III there was, 1.4ghz. I put the processor in and the green power light was orange and all fans were running, so i assumed I had to change the bios settings. So I put in the original processor, and the bios post screen came up, but it freezes half way through, I tried everything to reset it but nothing so I assumed with the help of this forum, that the mobo was just bad.
So I bought a new one for 15$ on amazon (one benefit of an old computer) and put all the original hardware back, worked great, put in new processor, same thing as before.
I don't intend on buying another new computer, as I already have two laptops and a tablet, I just wanted that one to leave hooked up to the TV. It is a small form factor edition of the computer so it is nice that it fits on a shelf or wherever i want it.

Please tell me there is a way to fix at least one of the motherboards.

Dell optiplex gx110, Windows xp pro sp3 (although it doesn't even get to windows), 512mb ram, 800mhz original pentiumIII, 1.4ghz new/killer pentiumIII, (don't laugh) 10gb HDD, 1 CD/DVD burner, 1 Floppy, 1 HDD, 2PCI ports total, 1PCI graphics card, 1 PCI usb 2.0

like i said before, the board only suports up to a 1ghz cpu,so put that one back in,if it doesnt still work, reset the cmos, and someone here can help with resetting it.

if that doesnt work, you can buy a better computer on e-bay for $50

when something takes more power,it doesnt suck or get more power,it would get less power so it shouldnt have damaged anything. so clearing the bios and putting the old proccesor back in should make it work

cabinfever1977- I have tried resetting the cmos (unplugged and left out CMOS for 15min)
and putting the old processor back in, and still does the same thing.

JMH-the new processor actually says it's only 1.45 volts rather than the originals 1.7v

yeah, I didn't really need it, I just thought if i could get it working, I mine as well. I can just plug my laptop in when I want to...

I haven't had a chance to try anything with it lately because I was working on my friends computer (general maintenance, and a ram upgrade) and I only have one desktop setup.

But today I plugged everything in after about two months of it being unplugged and it started up and booted windows fine and lasted for about an hour before freezing again. there wasn't any error message or anything it just stopped working.

I tried to do the reset JHM had told me about, but it did nothing, I am assuming he was talking about the two pins next to the HDD plug in on the board?

now when I plug it in it gets past the loading screen and to a time of day not set, invalid configuration data, and some other things and freezes.

I am at a loss, please help

Save up your money for an updated system, what you are trying to get is outdated. If you get xp, get at least 2 gb of memory.

My rule is I will not spend more than $5 on any single core machine, works quite well.

It will do what I need it to, and my laptop can do it, and has been, just slowly, and badly at times. My parents do have a new windows 7 (I'm 15) but they're always on it. And I know its kind of old, but the software I need to run works in xp and I have a product key for it, so I'll have to stick with that.

And thanks for all your help and advice all over these forums!!
