two OS's at the same time

i have win xp as my main OS and Linux Ubuntu on my slave drive as a "backup".

Is it possible to have both OS's running at the same time and switch between at will?

The only way i have done it in the past was to KVM two towers together and switch between them, now my partner has my other tower upstairs running win xp as well. so i'm stuck with one tower at the moment with two hard drives running seperate operating systems.

Why do you want to run two operating systems at the same time? you can always dual boot, but then you have to restart to use the other operating system.

well that's EXACTLY what i'm trying to avoid-having to restart to switch.

i like to use LINUX and to learn it but it won't run certain software/hardware that i use regularly eg:-TV Card, msn, etc , I want to be able to have the other one (xp) running downloading, copying dvd's etc and my web browser i use isn't supported in ubuntu(avant browser). i suppose i will just have to put a machine together out of my spares(i like to recycle :) ) and run linux on it as a learning pc so i can make mistakes etc and not fu*k my main machine, although i have another one upstairs identical(nearly) and a C2D toshiba laptop but my missus would fookin kill me if i uninstalled her WIN XP MCE and slapped LINUX on it lol :D
