Two quick ?'s

I have a P4 2.4 socket 478 its like 2 years old. the last few days it has been kinda laggy and today when i went to reboot i got a black screen and a message through the speakers saying system failed cpu test. over and over. so im assuming my cpu is shot, i dusted whole case checked the cpu was in solid and all wires are connected, my two questions are.
1. can i replace this with any P4 socket 478 processor.
2.if i get a new processor is it as easy as popping the new one in, or do i have to do something with the programming to let it know its a new processor being added?

1. Yes
2. ALmost. The actual installation can be interesting with the HSF and thermal paste, etc, but no, there is no programming needed. In the worst case, you would have to reset the BIOS.
 
1. As long as the motherboard supports the CPU, yes.
2. Nothing special unless you have to do a BIOS update.
If its only two years old then I'm pretty sure it will work with most skt.478 P4s.
If you could give us the motherboard information or at least the specific brand and model of the PC we can probably help you more.

from the ASUS website... "using the Intel 865PE chipset to support 3.2 GHz+ P4 CPU"
so yeah your mobo will support just about any P4 that fits in that slot.
no need to update BIOS
 
thanks guys, i cant deal with not having a comp, so hopefully new egg will come through again with speedy delivery
 
do you think this would be a decent upgrade and work the the MB i have. im planning on building a new comp in the near future but wanna get this comp up and running first?

Since your planning on getting a new system at a later date, that CPU will be fine, and you should notice a bit of a difference in overall performance.
 
well considering the old one was 2.4Ghz and this is 2.8Ghz you wont notice a huge difference but im sure it will be quicker at some things.
