Two routers, one household.

Hey guys, I'm new here and my name is Phil.
I was wondering if you could possibly help me find a solution.

So, here's the problem:
I live in a two story house, and my bedroom is on the second floor. But, the router for the internet is located on the first floor and on the opposite side of the house. Therefore giving me a really poor internet connection. I was wondering if there was some way that I could possibly connect a second router (wirelessly, of course) to my room to be able to have a stronger connection. Any help into this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Also, I already searched the forum for a solution, but came up empty handed. (I might have missed something, so if another topic has been posted, I would greatly desire the link to it.)
Thank you so much for your time, and I'm hoping for a speedy reply!

Phil~
P.S. I'm terribly sorry if this was posted in the wrong subsection for the forum.

No. Since the problem as I understand it is that you're not getting a good wifi signal from your router, adding another router to use the same weak wifi signal as its gateway will do nothing - the signal that you're connecting to now and the one the router would be connecting to are the same.

What you ought to do is invest in a wifi antenna like this one:http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicat...CODE=GOOGLEBASE&cm_mmc_o=VRqCjC7BBTkwCjCECjCE to boost your router's signal.

Alternatively, you could run an ethernet cable from the orginal router up to your room, to your computer or another wireless router.

So, connecting another router in my own room, from the phone line, would still provide a weak signal?

That's exactly what I'd like to be able to do. But, without the ethernet cable. Any suggestions?

Also, thank you for the wifi antenna suggestion, I'll keep that in mind.

Perhaps I misunderstood your OP - it sounded like you wanted to set up a router in your room to connect wirelessly to the one with the weak signal.

What do you mean "from the phone line"? What sort of internet service do you have? DSL? In that case, you may need another DSL modem or there may be some other "gadget" that can convert the phone signal to ethernet, which you could then plug into a second wireless router.

I'm sorry, I misunderstood your first reply regarding the second router being used as a gateway, but still with a bad connection.

We currently have AT&T DSL, so I was wondering whether or not I would be able to connect another modem and router, or just router through the phone jack.
If not, would I need some sort of converter? Or, would this not be able to work at all?

What I would recommend to you would be put ordinary switch (non wifi) near your internet cable and connect your wifi router from router which would be placed in your room (bedroom).

Actually linksys used to have access points that could be used as a WIFI repeaters i never tried it but its an option

You can only have one modem per connection, so that wouldn't work. They do make wireless repeaters that you could place in between the two locations to boost the signal. Also make sure that the current wireless router is in a spot so it's high up and away from walls, appliances, and furniture. If it's on a desk blocked by a computer and a wall, it will not get very far.

yeah if you have linksys i have heard that this works well. i have bad reception in my room so i will try it once i get enough $$

If you want to avoid using wireless, you could try Plug power adaptors. These usually come in 85Mbps or 200Mbps.

I am currently using Ebuyers cheapest 85Mbps plug adaptors and I have never had a problem with my connection, it might not be as good as running a dedicated Cat5/6 cable, but I get a better connection than I would with wireless :)

an example of these would be:

the only issue with these are that your electricity has to all be connected, I dont know how houses are wired, but I guess some sockets could run off different circuit boards?

I've found something that should help you for a while its a home made antenna booster
SYSTM did a vid on it watch the video first then go to the second link.
