ok, so I am to install Ubuntu 10.04 from USB (ran out of CD and DVD disk). and it comes to the desktop screen. Easy enough I go to the install shortcut, and go through the screens till it gets to partitions, and its got use whole disk and manual partition.

how do I go about manually installing it with 40GB so that I may still use Windows 7?

Do it manually.
You need to set up your partitions before hand, so use something like GParted to do that.
*Dont forget to make a partition for swap space!
Then just specify the correct partition for Ubuntu. Mount point is /
Format is ext2 or 3. (I use ext 3)
Install Grub to the entire hard drive.
Windows should be listened when you first reboot.
Otherwise, in a terminal type
sudo update-grub
and it'll find your windows, and will be selectable on reboot.
