Ubuntu and Windows 7 partition worries

I currently have windows 7 installed on my computer and I would like to split the hard drive in half for window 7 and ubuntu.

Now, I've done this before and wiped out my windows 7 space because of a later problem with the grub. Is there anyway I could back up windows 7 so I could re-install it if need be. I don't care much for files, backing files up is easy but I can't seem to find a program which for example allows me to install windows again.

Has anyone else got any more tips for this process?

There is a Shrink Volume tool in Windows 7. Use that to shrink your Win 7 volume down and you can use the rest for Ubuntu.

If I recall correctly, Windows will calculate how much space is currently being used and then double that for the new Win partition and the remainder will be freed up into a separate partition.

It's under Administrative Tools, Disk Management. Right-click on main partition and select Shrink Volume.
