Ubuntu Install problems

At one time, on my old PC, I had Ubuntu installed and running smoothly... (Keywords being "At one time") Now I cannot install it into VirtualBox, when I let it do a guided partition of the disk when trying to install, I shut it down, unmount the .iso and it will not boot. What partitions do I need to make here, could someone step me through the process? I do NOT like Ubuntu's partition interface... It's bad when the OS says it will do it for you then screws itself from booting...

Umm, wth? You installed it in virtual box? No wonder it wont boot, virtual box is an emulator.

You need an ext3 partition and a swap partition. The ext3 partition is where everything gets stored and the swap is for virtual ram, i usually make mine 1gb.

Mount points? Have you even ever used VirtualBox?

I have tried three times, I am now pissed at Ubuntu, so PCLinuxOS took its place and it's running great...

I am having sound driver troubles though... "device /dev/dsp can't be opened" I have no sound, what can I do?

EDIT: And is 800x600 the highest reso available?

In Ub's defense, it really thrives on a real install rather than a VB. Do you have a spare HDD or partition lying around?

PCL is nice in it's own right though. Welcome to OS :)
 
Intel, are you using VMware player? I actually plan on installing xubuntu as a VM very soon myself. Any tips you can give would be great.

I tried that once and it wouldn't boot, so I remembered the last time I had it working nicely, I had to do things manually... I still can't get my resolution past 800x600, is there something I can install?

I have none, I quit using Ubuntu in early Summer and since then have lost everything.. I am in PCLinuxOS right now, I love it, you should go check it out...

Once I get my laptop, I might be able to make things work right for once. I plan on having BackTrack2, PCLinuxOS, Vista, and another OS;).

Sometimes that just happens. No one knows why. If the Live CD loads at that res, it installs at that res. Best bet is to just reload the Live CD and it should boot up at a higher res.
 
Hmm, I honestly don't want to use Ubuntu, but I picked Xubuntu because of the Xfce desktop manager and it's 64 bit compatibility. Those are my requirements for the linux I am looking for. I don't want to have to install xfce. Xubuntu is the only thing that I can find that meets my requirements.

I can't change it in the LiveCD either... ARGH! 800x600 is retarded, some ppl have to squint to see 1024x1280, I have to step across the room to see 800x600, it's friggin huge, I HATE IT!!
 
No, you won't be able to change it, you have to reboot the Live CD until it loads at the correct res. It's a PITA at times, I know. Sometimes, the Live CD just reads the monitor info incorrectly and loads at a lower res.
