Ubuntu Issue

I have Ubuntu 8.10 installing on my other desktop, I'm trying to run virtual box to run xp and everytime I install virtual box, after the Ubuntu login there is just a white screen with a cursor and I can't go beyond that, I'm getting so pissed off!!!!! I havn't even got a chance to install xp into the virtual box, I don't understand why this is happening......
 
So I got it to work and I think its awsome to be able to run windows as a program instead of doing a dual boot, but my question was, would it effect the fps on like games and make them lag, because my computer would be trying to run two diffrent OS at the same time.... but I could turn off all of the eye candy and stuff like that in Ubuntu and see how it runs then, but I really don't no, what are your opinions?
