Ubuntu LINUX HELP :)

Hey guys. I have a problem regarding the installation of drivers. When run, they require me to install it under /ROOT. Now I thought that all I would have to do is type into the terminal the following:

..... SU
****** (password)

I then get another line with /ROOT@......

Should the ROOT be enabled now? I guess it shout but it's not as I still get the same warning....

If any of you know how to overcome this problem, please let me know. I need to install the drivers for my Nforce chipset to get my NIC to work.

Alternatively:

What commands should ensure that the root account is turned on?

I used this: su - root
su
sudo su
sudo su -root

However, the above fail to activate the root account!

I believe its su or su then something it been a wile since I used Ubuntu LINUX.
BTW: I hated Ubuntu LINUX

What distro would you recommend then? It has to be free and graphical . AND should be quite easy to use.

Suse is an excellent distro, and I believe version 9.3 has just been released to mirrors; if not, 9.2 is freely available.

I agree with red onion on suse. Ubuntu was rely hard to setup networking with windows with samba. Mainly because the samba program was incomplete. Suse is produced by Novell and was simple to setup. Red Hat is also good.
