Ubuntu & my laptop

Okay, so firstly, since I installed Ubuntu on my lappy it's been as good as a desktop. Backlight brightness doesn't work - no power saving options other than those available for desktops are available (apart from lid close/open actions). Is there any tweaks that would allow me to adjust the backlight, CPU frequency and whatever other power saving options...?

Secondly, I already have Ubuntu installed on muh desktop, and I'd like to try something else... since I like KDE desktop and love the ease of Ubuntu, I assume Kubuntu would be my number-one option here... Kubuntu still tries to do the same as Ubuntu, make Linux as easy as possible, right? Is there anything I should probably know before going for Kubuntu? Any reasons NOT to go for it? Worse support or anything like that? Is it significantly more resource-intensive?

And thirdly, I have a problem with my wireless, but I'm posting that in a separate thread later as I'm a little busy right now...

Oh and the laptop is Compaq Presario C700 (C731TU?)

Kubuntu is made by Ubuntu but it comes preinstalled with the KDE Desktop Environment instead of the Gnome DE.

I've ditched Ubuntu for now, but last time I heard, KDE4 was in a real bad state and extremely buggy. Of course, things may have changed from a month or 2 ago. What I suggest doing is do a bit of reading on the Ubuntu Forums website to see what kind of state its in and download the Kubuntu livecd so you can play with it without installing it.

Power management / backlight features never worked for me (2 years using Ubuntu) and I have a well supported Intel based laptop.

Wireless has always been a pain in Linux, I'll look out for the thread :)

Any disadvantages to doing this as opposed to installing Kubuntu fresh?

I'll probably stick with Ubuntu for now and wait until KDE gets sorted out. Kubuntu apparently comes with KDE3, KDE4 version is community-supported only.

I just tried the LiveCD on my mum's Acer lappy and backlight adjustment, w/less and everything worked just great. Maybe we're just the unlucky ones...? Oh well.
