Ubuntu Problem... Need Help

Alternate? Whats that?

Alternate Install CD. It's still the full version of the software, it's just in a text-based basic GUI installation interface. There is also an option for a command line install.

The Alt-CD is good if you want to drop it in and install a system.

I would double check to make sure all your hardware is supported.

How did you install it? What file system? Did you make a root and a swap partition?

I got the livecd in the post. Put it it and booted it. When it got to the desktop I double clicked the install icon. I put all my details in and when it asked me how it wants to partition and stuff, I quit.

Before putting the cd in, I assumed it wouldn't format (stupid, I know) so I got gparted and made an ext3 filesystem with no swap because I remembered Ubuntu saying something about making a swap space itself. I put the cd back in and clicked install again. Went through everything and clicked "Generic, Use whole hd (100gb)" or something like that when it asked me how to partition. It had the option of using a certain amount of the hd, using all of it(what I clicked) and something else(sorry, I forget). It finished the install without glitch.

At the end when it gave me option the continue using livecd or restart I selected restart. When it restarted it went to the grub screen and gave me 2 seconds to select how I wanted to boot or else it would load default. I let it start normally and it said something like "Loading, please wait" in the top left corner. Then it seemed like something had happened, well , something happened but not what I wanted, the screen went blank.

The first time it happened I left it for about five minutes and turned it off. After reading Ubuntu support I pressed "ctrl-alt-f1" when it was blank. It then says something about not being able to load resume image and goes through the boot process like normal and takes me to the log-in screen. Everything works perfectly after logging in.

Thats a bit of text. I would appreciate any help you have to offer (if you manage to get through ^that^).

Thanks

Ahhh, a laptop...that may explain a bit:) Some laptops are odd when it comes to certain Distros, Ubuntu being one of them.

Personally, I would re-try the Live CD and manually partition (not use the generic setting). I'd make a 2 gig Swap, 5 Gig Root, and however big you want Home. it does sound like a bad install based on Post #25; maybe something didn't install fully; GRUB's default timer is 10 seconds with Ubuntu, not 2.

it is possible though, that it may take some tweaking after the fact if it does indeed have issues running on that laptop.

It is really hard for me to quite understand what is going on with being able to physically look at the machine. At this point I would suggest a full wipe and reinstall. When doing so make a 2gig swap partition and use the rest for the root partition (also known as /). Then run through the install and don't let it just install all default options go in and look around and see if perhaps you are using an unsupported resolution for your video card.

Thanks for sticking with me. I'd say most people would have drifted away from this post around the 2nd post.

Do you want me to reformat outside of Ubuntu(gparted)? I looked into the resolution and found that everything was set correct. Something about a uspash.conf and xorg.conf. I went into both to see.

Just boot up the Live CD and install it. You can use the CD's Gparted utility.

We don't roll like that :)

Try a different distro, I bet you are running an unsupported resolution. Try fedora core or suse, or debain itself and see what happens.

If I'm trying a different os. Can you recommend one that has a network and security focus. I am a "linux-noob" now but intend to become a Jedi Master with linux. If there is one that has a gui and stuff that would be good.

Whats that. How can it be an os and a tool, or am i stupid. I am even using my laptop (with ubuntu) now to use the internet. That just shows everything works (apart from startup). While I was waiting on your reply, I did some research on that "kinet: no resume image" that I get when I press ctrl-alt-f1. I found absolutly nothing. What does it mean because from what happens when I press it, it seems like its waiting for it or something.

take a loot at this for more info on backtrack, and if you are serious about network security you will most likely have to buy a third party wifi card for your laptop that supports full on open source drivers.

As for your problem with your laptop, it is hard to say what exactly is the issue. I suggest starting your laptop in verbose mode to see what errors out if anything when booting. Or I guess single use mode. I haven't used Debian distros a ton, so I am not 100% familiar with them. I have more experience with Unix, OS X and redhat based distros.

Ok, thanks for your help. I am downloading that. I will report back when it is installed.

I would have paid but I'm poor. Haha
