I just recently installed ubuntu 8.10 and now it loads and when i get to the login screen and when i type my username and password the screen just goes to that brownish color. I'm wondering why it won't go to the desktop after i log in.

I think it's an compaq, it had xp on it and i think it was made around 2004. The funny is it won't go to the desktop after i login. I've never used ubuntu before so i don't know alot about it.

Have you tried moving your mouse when the black Desktop appears? I'm not certain if it was addressed for II or not, but it was a known issue on certain system configurations with previous versions.

On a side note, be wary of whom you receive Linux advice from on these forums. You'll (come to) find that a fairly small percentage of us actually use it on a daily basis (and not do the whole Distro-whore-flavor-of-the-day gig) and know a thing or two, while others simply hop on the bandwagon.

Yes i have tried moving my mouse the desktop isn't black. It just turns that light brown color that the background is when the login appears.

Ok how long can it be? I don't have any cards in it at all.

Well if it's like that for over two minutes I'd say there's problem.

As long as you have integrated Intel graphics you should be fine... I run Ubuntu off a similar rig with integrated Intel graphics... it actually has less (256MB) RAM than yours...

Well i left it their for 30min and it didn't do much. Right now i'm going to try and install 8.04.1 and see if that will work then once i get that to work i will update it. Wouldn it say what type of processor in the bios?

Edit: It says in bios about the processor
intel celeron
cpu speed: 2600mhz/400mhz
cache ram: 128kb

Edit: I installed ubuntu 8.04.1 and it works great no problems yet.
