Ubuntu Questions

i know this isn't related but this is the first/only ubuntu thread i've seen, cared to look enough to find, but how can i get the drivers for my wireless adapter and graphics card on there so i can use internet and get over 1024x768 res.

lynksis wusb54g i'm guessing v1 since it doesn't show one, i believe using wubi screwed me a little cuz i think it's missing some files i need, and i found the code i think i need in the terminal but idk how to put this symbol |, the comand was "sudo lsmod | grep p54" found on ubuntu forum listing with a different driver that they said to replace with my driver versin or whatever, then found mine in lynksis list and is a prism5 chipset with p54 driver.

so far other than not being able to do anything really it seems pretty cool, fount a post with 20 things to do, but don't remember where i saw the coding to get the mac style bottom bar, and i wanna get to where i can get those cooler displays like the ones in the post your desktop or whatever thread under desktops catagory.

http://www.knowliz.com/2008/09/20-things-to-do-after-installing-ubuntu.html

and want the gpu drivers to go over 1024x768 res, god i hat that, and what is the res for 720p, my tv is rated for it but i swear it goes higher, but my gpu sucks so doubt it can even do that on the desktop

and how do i get to system > admin > drivers, i really know nothing about this stuff and didn't, or don't remember, seeing this stuff.

booting back to ubuntu and going to downstairs comp, might throw it on there too if dad says yes, so most likely no.

johnny, did you look for restricted drivers? (system -> administration -> drivers). That may take care of the GPU. As for wireless, which adapter do you have? knowing the exact model will aid us in finding a solution for it.

Jonny, you really need your own thread on this one...

The pipeline character "|" is found by using shift + "\" which happens to lie right above the return key (at least on my laptop keyboard), it allows the output of one command to be plugged into another.

In this case, you are taking the results of the list modules commands (lsmod) and asking grep (global expression print) to search through the those results for the line specifically talking about the phrase "p54". Otherwise, you'll get pages and pages of results that you would have to manually slog through to find one or two lines of information.

In Ubuntu 10.04 or 10.10 (or 11.04 in classical mode), you go to the top bar and click on "System", then "Admin" and then you'll find the "Drivers" dialog in the drop-down list. In 11.04 Unity, then you'll need to click the upper right-hand corner and select System Settings from there.

i relly need a laapy/ipod/smartphone, i'm off to try that stuff, hopefully i will remember the majority of it and get it working so i can post from it.

ok, the p54 thing came up with the mac80211 and some other things i know are related to the ip's and internet and all, but i think it would help to just take it off of the current ubuntu setup or something, all i know about it is that i downloaded it off of their site from a link last night and it had an installer called wubi, and the only thing i changed is the drive and size from c to d and like 3gb to 16 or 20gb, but i know it shows i have access to 16gb's

but how can i get ahold of the 10.04 or something like that that seems to be more common and better/easier to use, and i think easier would help me alot.

considering the point of this was getting internet, how am i supposed to get the ndiswrapper on there, it needs some packs to become operational, and i'm posting from different computer, or after booting into windows on that one.

and btw i moved the comp to right beside me down here so i can trial and error much faster now

would anyone mind doing a steam chat or something so it can be much faster, i really just want to get this thing running correctly.

got the wubi for 10.04.1, about to install

Would it be possible to access the internet via wired connection? In my experience, Linux distros can almost always get connected that way.

well i already moved it down to my sunroom, but the wireless router it like 30ft away and i don't wanna move it again, and i can't get our cables to go that far, but i probably should've set it up over there, was just easier to put here right beside me now with my tv propped against the wall.

and plus currently it has no ubuntu cuz i uninstalled it to put 10.04.1 on it, but the install failed so i have to remove it again and re install it which takes forever, even thought 11.04 was pretty dang fast.

Why do you need a wireless adapter driver? Maybe I'm just lucky, but out of the 3 different adapters I've tried, and every distro I've tried, I've never had to install the drivers for my wireless adapter. I just enter my network information and I'm online.

As far as your drivers, are you using a ATI card or A Nvidia one?

well my install didn't have the drivers for my adapter, and my gpu is a radeon 9600se, i know it's old but its what i've got and 1 reason i wanted to try linux was cuz it's size means it's pulling less from my athlon xp 2400+ @2.0ghz, and plus xp is so large and all, plus ide cable, it makes my comp so slow, but the time i was on ubuntu, it was pretty fast in comparison, and also i idioticaly clicked on 1920x1600 or something and now my monitor doesn't support it, and i was using the driver software in xp in the corner which doesn't have a timer, so i'm trying to get this goung, bout to unplug it all, take it to my router and plug it straight to the wifi and the 32" over there, tell yall how that goes in 1 min.

got ubuntu 10.1 installed and about to boot and configure or whatever, and it's beside my router so i can plug straight to the interwebz

ok, it finished, but now even if i plug a cable into the back it doesn't seem to get the internet connection, but i think i have a phone cable if that matters, i can pull out my xbox's ethernet cord, but luckily it isn't unity, it is the normal GNOME UBUNTU 10.10 lucid lynx or whatever, but i need internet to work and want to start doing stuff now.

found the right plug and put xbox cord that i know works into it, green light in the clear plastic of the female plug, the one on the comp., but ubuntu still says no network, even rebooted

and when i use lspci it doesn't show any ethernet controllers even though there is a ethernet plug in the back i/o panel

apparently many other have had the same problem hat is causing this, reinstalled windows a while back and the ethernet drivers weren't includedm like 20+ other forums on this that i've seen so far.

is there any way for someone to send me like a installed directory with all the programs i need and the drivers for a lynksis wusb54g wireless adapter in there so i can overwrite my current directory with that, it should still work shouldn't it, and btw, ubuntu recognizes my gfx card under lspci comand, but since there's no internet i'm guessing i can't install it or anything, again, my ethernet drivers are goe and my wireless adapter isn't built into the coding, if nothing else tomarrow i will steal this comps. adapter and i guess reinstall ubuntu and see if it loads the stuff in there to use it, then use it to get the drivers and stuff for the normal adapter and install it, then put this one's adapter back

currently using a different adapter, which keeps dropping offline ever couple mins so i have to disable and reinable the connection, but it has to go back to my other computer in a bit and i keep getting this

jonnyp11@ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get install ndisgtk
[sudo] password for jonnyp11:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package ndisgtk

and i need the file to install my normal adapter.

you dont have the source location to get the package.
So you need to find what the source line is for that package then add it using the software sources utility. Then run
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ndisgtk

idk how to do that and am currently updating additional drivers in the system>administrator

and do you know why my connection would repeatedly randomly fail, and only way to reconnect is to unplug and replug the adapter.

well i went there and the list thing already had all but the bottom one and the one in the seperate box checked like the one in the picks.

and are there any manufacturers or cpu's or stuff like that that are either unsupported or not very compatible, like they are known to have problems with running ubuntu, cuz i'm on a compaq presario, made by hp i believe, model like sn4000nx i so, changed the case so can't see it right now.

Like i said, you need to find what the source line is for that program, it's not going to be already in there. I'm not going to do all your work for you when you can google most of this stuff. That link was the first result..

ok, well it finally went in and started and was doing good and all, but then it wanted the ubuntu cd, and i installed with wubi, so i don't have it and can't get one right now, any solution for this or other way to install it
