Ubuntu vs Vista Comparison

During this thanksgiving i decided to take a break from windows and have been on my Ubuntu for three days now. i seem to able to do a whole lot of stuff more easily than i thought. the booting is fast, doesn't take for ever like the Microsoft product.

I do wish they made their browsers a lil more fast, it comes with firefox preinstalled. but to be honest, firefox on linux sucks. the best browser one can use on a linux platform is opera, well thats what i think.lol

What are your opinions about Ubuntu

ah the good old "i've just learn linux" thread :P
no kidding you'll be back to windows soon enough. When you'll realize that there are applications you will need that linux doesn't have, you'd probably end up dual booting.

as for the distro, I don't like ubuntu, never fancied it. I'm more of a PcLinux OS 2009 user.

I have K-Ubuntu at home and i think that it is great. Any programs/games that are windows based wil run via Wine a majority of the time.

Microsoft is not really required because programs like Open Office, etc will work with the file types and i have not had any issues; to date.

I have a Windows Vista Laptop also and i have that Dual Booted with Linux so i can move things about from my PC to the laptop.

Linux is good because it is Open Source.

I think that Ubuntu is better than Vista (IMO).

Which applications? That's becoming a pretty weak argument. A fresh install of just about any mainstream Linux distro is far more useful than a fresh install of Windows. For the majority of home users, there is an equal or better Linux app.

Photoshop, Dreamweaver and Quicken will run just fine in Wine or preferably Crossover. OpenOffice will read AND write MS Office .xls, ppt and .doc files.

This tweak should speed up Firefox nicely.
1. in firefox URL bar, type 'about:config'
2. accept warning
3. in URL bar, type 'ipv6'
4. network.dns.disableIPv6 entry appears.
5. Double click this entry to set the value to true.

Now FF will try the more prevalent ipv4 protocol for name resolution.

Lots of folks like Ubuntu but I prefer openSuSE.

I won't stress on applications as there are so many, and even if people say there are a lot of alternative, the bottom line is, it's not better.
I know wine / crossover has improve, but I honestly don't think the OP will actually go through the hassle of porting apps in wine.
