Windows 7 died on my last night; didn't want to boot into the OS anymore ( I even had a backup image on my slave drive...That didn't work)... :(

What do you guys think? I have Ubuntu 9.10 on my laptop, seems pretty legit/stable..(Wayy faster than XP, like I had on there previously)

The desktop I want to put the OS on is in my sig.

If you vote for Ubuntu, what do you like better, GNOME or KDE?

Thanks!

I guess it's true what Microsoft says; reinstall Windows every 6 months..

You are comparing Apple's to Oranges....

It all comes down to personal preferences and what you want to accomplish on your computer. If it weren't for video games being Windows only, I would have ditched Windows a long time ago.

Fruit is good. I don't game though, really... Sometimes I play FSX, but now that the second semester has started I can't anymore. I might just dual boot, like Stoic suggested... I got mad at Windows a few times, with FF being unresponsive a few times, and my IM client doing the same, and of course, aspell.ex stops working randomly.... But then again, not all Windows programs work on Ubuntu using Wine...

Just re-install windows 7. If that doesn't work go to plane "B" which is vista. Everybody hates vista but I myself have never had a problem from it. I like Ubuntu but every time I reinstall it a new problem pops up. Really though it's just up to you, if you think you can live off of just Ubuntu then go for it. I couldn't do that, hardly any of my programs work with wine and I just can't give them up.

go for Ubuntu! the new version is amazing and I love it! but yeah dual booting is also a good idea. install Windows 7 first and then Ubuntu, because if you do it in the wrong order, you won't be able to log into Ubuntu.

whether you want gnome or kde depends on you. if you feel more comfortable with windows-looking environment I would go with KDE. If you want a mac-ish look just go with the gnome. personally I find KDE more neat and organized, but who knows what you like?

windows 7 has been good to me and i have had very little issues with it even managing to run older games, got the oringal home world running no problem, i have noticed a small amount of slowdown recently, but nothing compared to a normal windows installation and most of the problems were sorted out by me finally getting around to defrag my hard drives and maintaining my computer.
I love the new aero features.
the only major problem i had was the sharing service was hogging most of my cpu usage
i wish i could vote for ubuntu i do love it but lack of compatibilty is a problem for me

I like vista, prefer it to XP and 7, that is atleast while 7 isn't working for me, like making steam think I am german, or ff crashing and MW2 hanging. Once it is working properly, maybe after sp1, I will reinstall and try again, but really can't be doing, vista is still the best OS imho.

I would dual boot, even if you just have fsx on windows and that is all, windows servers a purpose, and ubuntu can do everything else. Both have good things going for them, depends what you want but dual booting would get you the best of both worlds
