Ubuntu won't recognize my SATA Hard Drive

I'm trying to install Ubuntu using a Live CD. However, when I get to the step about partitioning, nothing shows up except my external hard drive. I'm pretty sure it is connected correctly... it is vibrating when I touch it. It is a seagate 250GB, unused. Do I need to format it some other way?

Also, will Ubuntu work off of a western digital passport?

Try unplugging your external, then try and install ubuntu again and see how it goes.
O and yes, wed passports work in ubuntu.

Nope. I tried unplugging the passport, but the SATA is still unrecognized. Installing a SATA is just connecting the sata cable to motherboard, and hooking up to power supply, right?

I think you may have misunderstood my question. I want to know if it's possible to install Ubuntu on the passport and be able to run Ubuntu wherever I plug it in?

Yes, it is possible to install ubuntu on an external hard drive and have it boot off that. Just make sure the bios are set to boot off a usb device.
