Ubuntu!!

I have just spent some long time downloading and attempting to try out Ubuntu
having read about it in a popular computer mag. What a waste of time!

I have done three downloads, and tried it several times and different ways but continually get unrecoverable error messages.

It won't even perform from a disc in trial mode and to say that it is slow is the understatement of the decade.

Perhaps I've just been unlucky but on this showing Microsoft have no need to worry about future profits being in jeopardy from this software.

Is anyone actually succesfully using this OS I wonder? :)

Yep I use it all the time. Laptop and Desktop.

What version did you use? I have heard of a few problems with 10.10 not downloading correctly.

This is the ISO that I used for Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 64 bit (If you click it it will download for you.)

I use Linux Mint myself, which is based off Ubuntu. I like it better cause it's faster and easier to use.

Hi, mate

You are clearly a rare specimen and should be stuffed and mounted! ;)

However, on a serious note thanks for the response. I used 10.10 at first but then tried 10.04 LTS with no more success so maybe it's just down to me!

Are you using it on it's own or running in parallel with Windows which is what I was trying to do? Maybe it's not as successful that way do you think?

Best wishes.

Mate, I think its more an issue that you are having rather than it being hard. Some questions:

How did you burn the disk?

Do you have a second partition/hard drive to install linux on?

Have you tried using the wubi installer?

Do you run it on it's own or can it be accessed on boot up as an alternative to Windows?

Was it easy to download?

Cheers.

Yes, i dual boot it on my laptop. LM10 is out, but I'm still running KM9 cause 10 was too buggy and slow on my laptop.

Downloading the torrent is faster than the direct downloads.

i occasionally play around with linux,

don't waste your time with ubuntu. 10.10 was seriously unstable. 10.04 is meh ok, but not worth the trouble.

currently running Studio 10.04; comes with a bunch of unstable beta software.

getting ready to install windows 7 back on here.

also, the advanced linux community hate ubuntu, they say it gives linux a bad name because its watered down for windows noobs and real linux users use CLI, blah blah blah.

stick with windows, you'll be happier in the end.

Woah dude. Calm down. If the linux community hated ubuntu so much then it wouldn't be so popular. ubuntu is the most user friendly linux available and where most new linux users start. And they aren't that unstable. I haven't run into a problem yet on 10.10.

There's another way to get ubuntu 10.10 first YOU MUST get the older version of ubuntu then update it manually.

I've been running Ubuntu for years, first as dual-boot with XP Pro, but at the moment I am running 10.4 AMD-64.

You need to use the MD5 to verify the quality of the download before burning the image to CD. I can't remember if the newer CDs still have a validation feature on them when they boot. But then again, if you can boot, then half the problem is solved, eh?

Hi, guys

I'm really grateful for all of you giving advice and help but I'm wondering if maybe for a non-expert in computers like me I be better sticking to XP?

I used it since I got my first PC and although I've had to reload it a few times because of different problems it's pretty simple (for simple people like me) to use.

Maybe Linux stuff is more for the enthusiast who actually knows what they're doing rather than the likes of me?

Pity 'though 'cos it would have been interesting to try it out.

Anyway thanks for your time guys.

It's not that hard! Ubuntu isn't for enthusiasts, it's for anyone who wants to try something different. That's not windows. If you are having trouble setting it up, just tell us where you are getting stuck at.

I think you might be burning the disk at a fast rate and it's not burning properly.

The avatar bird of voyagerfan99 was so hilarious for some reasons i don't know why :D "oh really?" anyway let me share my experience to you there's no problem in 10.10 because i've already tried that version the only thing that makes 10.10 ugly is the boot screen.

Ubuntu is not hard to download. download it directly from the ubuntu site and burn the iso image to a cd.
If you want to try it out, then once it is burnt, just install under windows just as any other program would (wubi).
The 10.04 i386 version is very stable on my laptops, and the 10.04 AMD64 version works well on my HP. 10.10 is unstable with my newer acer, but had no issues (minus HDD failures) on others.

cheers mate.

you should get windows 7 as XP is getting old; it's easier to learn than linux.

you can still play with linux if you're feeling masochistic, but i wouldn't depend on it for critical work.

Fail.

Win 7 is easier to learn only because it is XP with new drapes (ignoring the technical upgrades in this instance).

Ubuntu, which is one of the easiest distributions to learn, is as capable as Windows for getting work done. It can be just as pretty as XP.

Yes, there are differences (OMG, the window controls are on the left instead of the right, what to do?), but it isn't any different than trying to learn XP (or Win 7) after using Windows 98 for years.

The only place where Ubuntu (and Linux as a whole) falls short, in my opinion, is in gaming. Vendors generally don't port to Linux, as the market just isn't there (yet).

lol :)
you talk about window as if every new linux release is made from scratch. an OS upgrade is just that, the same OS with new and/or improved functionality.

linux might be very capable of getting lots of work done, but it's more difficult getting it there. in this case i would recommend the OP, given his level of expertise, to stick with windows but to get to know linux on the side. finding help for window usually results in some pretty pictures, linux give you cryptic commands.

using linux exclusively for a school semester made me appreciate windows more. just mho. ;)
