I am extremely hesitant to buy Vista, so I was wondering if Ubuntu was a good alternative. How much compatibility does it have with other programs, and how fast is it?

express what you mean by compatibility, because there are alternatives that can replace existing windows based applications.

if you want it for pure gaming you are stuck in a windows environment.

I meant will I be able to find most programs that I would use in XP.

And I won't be using it for gaming, so that isn't a problem.

you need to let us know exactly what you would be using it for. yes, you can find most programs for Linux.

Yeah it can do that all natively

VLC - can play just about any audio/video

bit torrents work on Linux

k3b is a burning app that is a lot like nero

and of course you can run just about any web browser you want to

LAME - is a free audio encoder that supports MP3s, but if you are going to go open source you may want to look into FLAC (free lossless audio codec) or OGG since they are lossless encoders and are free open source for higher quality rips of audio.
