Uh, why does my computer take so long to boot

Ok, so about 6 or so months ago I was trying to make my computer boot faster (meaning load Windows and programs faster), and I deleted ctfmon from starting up automatically. Well, that caused some problems with my internet, so I had to have it start automatically again. Since that all happened, Windows takes what seems like forever to boot. My computer will show the desktop of my computer with no icons or anything and stay with that for 2 or 3 minutes. After 2 or 3 minutes Windows and all the programs that start up when my computer starts up will begin to load and everything will be fine. Any ideas what could be causing this? The only programs that start up when my computer boots is Aim, MSN, CCC, Atitool, and ctfmon.

Try going to Start/Run/ type "msconfig"/ then go to the "startuptab" and uncheck everything you don't need running at startup. Also theres a program called "CCleaner" and you could try running antispyware and virus scans.
 
You can google it, and im not 100% sure but if you uncheck all of it, it will just re-add whatever it needs.. not 100% sure on that though

That's what I did, usually the startup stuff are all junk that you don't need. Just don't mess too much with the services ;).

lol, i don't like messing with the services lol. I thought you could just take it all off, i remember doing it on my other pc a few times...
 
First off what is your Operating System. Mine is XP (Sp2)

Too begin with & you're not going to like this, but unless you get rid of your Pentium 4 and go to a better CPU system like a Core 2 Duo or at least dual Core you are going to continue with a slow boot, no matter how little programs are in startup. I have a Pentium 4 as my second computer (planning to replace it as soon as I have some extra dough) & as I said I have the same problem you have & there is nothing you can do as long asa you have that CPU, in my opinion. My
primary computer, a Toshiba Tecra Core 2 Duo, with XP (Sp2) takes 10-15 seconds to boot up with the same programs on both computers. I also have 2.5 gb of RAM on both as well. The only programs I left in my msconfig are: CTFMON & my antivirus program. You don't need anything else. Idoubt that will help you though in regards to the Pentium 4.

Slow boot is not caused by an P4! Heck I got an XP SP2 running on my 166MHz with 128MB PC100 RAM and it boots faster than my E4300!

I suggest an reformat. Backup everything an reformat.

Remove AIM and MSN from the startup. Both of them are trying to connect to internet and log on at the same time and hence the bandwidth is clogged. If you need to use them, run each program individually after you are done booting up. I mean start AIM first and then MSN after AIM is fully operational or vice versa.
Also download CCleaner from here: http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
You can remove the startup item using this program also. And then run the cleaner to remove any temporary files, and other residue of spyware from your computer. Also don't forget to scan the registry for issues and repair them if any. Save a backup when prompted just in case you need to go back to previous state.

I don't think having a P4 makes the computer slower. If you are comparing the P4 with C2D you will definitely notice a processing speed difference. But having a P4 definitely not the cause of the slow boot. As oscaryu1 had said, C2D can even run slower than P4 if it is clogged with unnecessary program (I'm not saying that your C2D is clogged, oscaryu1) :)
 
yeh hardware doesnt really help windows boot significantly faster. My 600 MHz overclock cpu and 130 MHz overclock on ram made windows 2 seconds faster at best compared to stock

:D Meh it's not :D If you consider defragging and disk cleanup everytime time I get offa the internet :) And reformats every month for no reason :)
