Uk PC Buyer NOOOOB

Hi,

Basically I was going to get an Xbox 360 for games but if I did that I would need a TV (which I don't have). I would then really need to get a plasma or similar (no point in buying a crap one). The total cost of all of this would probably come to around £1,200 - £1,500. I could probably get a nice PC for this amount which I could use to play games and watch movies on etc... I would rather get a PC if this is the case because then I could have it in my own room, rather than a communal lounge.

So my budget is £1,200 to £1,500. I want to play games and watch movies only! (no multi tasking etc...). Where is a good place to buy, Scan.co.uk?

I am guessing I should get an e8400, Twin XMS 2x2gb ram (I remember reading a while back that if I don't want to overclock I could just buy kingston value ram and get roughly the same performance), 88000 GPU. I have no real idea on which components are needed. I would also need a 5.1 speaker system and the monitor would need to be around 25-30 inches (is this too big - I will only ever be about 1-2 ft away from the screen, max.)

I don't think I would overclock now but would do in the future when I want to increase the longevitiy of my PC.

Thank you very much.

Michael

Xbox360 has the option of connecting by HDMI doesn't it? You can buy pc screens now with HDMI inputs on them and you don't even have to spend a fortune...

Good point! But the advantage of a PC is better graphics and the ability to use mouse and keyboard (I'm not a fan of controllers for fps games).

p.s. I couldn't find a faq post to see if I am allowed to reply within 24 hours. Let me know if this is not the case.

Thanks fo the links...any spec ideas? I don't know what is 'good'.

You have a very nice budget so a quad core Intel, 4Gb ram, 9800GX2 nvidia, X-Fi sound card, 24" widescreen or bigger... Just post a few combinations up and get people's advice until you narrow it down to something you're happy with and everyone else is giving you the thumbs up with. With your budget you should be able to get a very good spec.

E8400
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3P
Crucial Ballistix 2 x 1GB DDR2 800 CL4
Point Of View 9800GTX 512MB
Seagate ST3500320AS 500GB OEM
Optiarc AD-7200S OEM
Seasonic S12 II 500W PSU (if you are not OC, you don't need a bigger PSU)
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit- OEM
Case, say £50
Auzentech X-fi Prelude 7.1 Gaming SoundCard (optional)
Logitech Z-5500 (Optional)
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro (Optional)
Arctic Cooling MX-2
Approx. £1035 @ ebuyer.com

26" - 32" TV say £450, you're better off to currys/ dixon to have a look before order online. I personally prefer Samsung/ Sony.

I'd go for another 2x 1GB kit, as with a larger PSU. 500W should be fine, but the 9800GTX isn't exactly "simple and energy conserving"...

True, but that seasonic PSU have 80plus efficiency. So if he not overclock, should be OK.
May be altherantively get Hipper Type-R 680W...

Thanks for the help so far. I said I wouldn't realy overclock now, but maybe in a years time when it starts to become obselete. Would I be better off buying a cheaper PC now and o'cing it, rather than buy a more expensive PC now and o'cing that in a year or so time?

Are there any releases (cpu's, gpu's) coming out soon which I should wait for, or any price drops?

Is a 9000-series nVidia card worth the extra cash, over an 8000-series card?

How much better graphics would a high end system (i.e. e8400, 4gig, 98000 nvidia) give than an Xbox 360 on an Hd-TV?
